Expressive Arts

The Expressive Arts within a therapeutic counseling practice may be described as the use of drawing, writing, poetry, painting, movement, collage, music, voice, theater, and other art forms, for the purposes of growth and healing. Using the expressive arts we can learn to assimilate and integrate feelings, thoughts, and life experiences. Through expressive arts work, we build resources, develop coping skills, and make mind- body-heart connections. We create compassion for self and others, increase awareness and sensitivity, and expand creativity. With the arts we experience expressiveness, playfulness, joy, congruence, and a greater range of response to life. Through the expressive arts we develop an authentic relationship with ourselves and with life.
